Various methods of divination using bones can be found in multiple different cultures across history. The Sangomas or Inyangas of South Africa throw the bones in order to access the advice of ancestors. There is archeological evidence that Norse witches, known as volvas, carried and used bones and charms to tell fortunes. Many were buried with their charm bags. Scapulimancy is the practice of divination by use of scapulae or shoulder bones. This is most widely practiced in China and the Sinosphere. Another fascinating form of bone casting is Shagai, a Mongolian divination practice that uses four anklebones (astagalus) from a sheep or goat to foretell the future.

Bone Reading Set

The pieces in a bone reading set are very personal to the reader. No two bone sets will be the same. Some readers may include bones, teeth or claws of a specific animal that were found in nature or purchased to add to a collection, while others like to include more commonly found household items such as charms, coins, keys, shells and stones. Creating a bone reading set is an integral part of learning how to use it. Over time, the reader becomes familiar with their set and connects with the pieces on a deeper level than they might with other divination tools. Bone reading sets also change frequently. Pieces may be added or removed for various reasons.

Casting or Throwing

Often, the bones are cast from a bag, basket or other container onto a mat/cloth in front of the querent then interpreted based on their individual meanings and where they have landed in relation to the mat and the other pieces on it. Caution should be used when casting the bones as some of the items may be fragile. The casting cloth may have markings with circles or quadrants drawn or painted on it to determine whether the pieces are relevant to the past, present or future, or the North, East, South and West. Pieces which land outside of the circle or off of the casting cloth entirely are considered to be unimportant to the reading. The reader may throw or cast all their whole set or just a handful of items.

Reading

The process of reading the bones is entirely intuitive. There are no cut and dry methods or meanings like those found in books on Tarot or Runes. Some readers rely on spiritual guidance from their ancestors or the spirits within the pieces of their bone reading set while others use a more scientific approach. Does one piece seem to point to another or is one upside down? These things can change the meaning of the reading.

Charging and Cleansing

A bone reading set can be charged or cleansed in a number of different ways. Some readers will place the set on their altar or keep it there when not in use, asking their ancestors, gods or the universe to bless the pieces. Alternatively, the set can be charged under the light of the moon. Cleansing, as with any other magical tool, can be done via smoke, salt, or burial in the earth. It is recommended that the reader be the only person to touch or handle the bone set.

What is Bone Reading?
